From Learner to Livestock Breeding Professional: Casey’s Journey with Orion Training
When Casey decided to upskill in livestock breeding, she wasn’t just looking to gain new qualifications — she wanted practical, hands-on expertise that could make a real difference on the land. After completing a series of Livestock Breeding courses with Orion Training, Casey now feels confident, capable, and ready to take her career to the next level.
Gaining Invaluable Skills and Cost Savings on the Farm
For Casey, the biggest benefit of completing the Livestock Breeding courses has been the ability to perform the full range of breeding practices herself — from collecting semen and assessing morphology and motility, to artificially inseminating livestock and conducting pregnancy testing.
“These are invaluable skills for any property I work on,” Casey said. “The cost savings are certainly significant, but what’s even more important is the productivity I’ve gained. Being able to manage these processes myself gives me far more control over herd management and breeding outcomes.”
Paving the Way for a New Career Path
With years of experience working with cattle, Casey wanted to formalise and expand her skills as she explored a career change. Completing the Livestock Breeding units — including Artificial Insemination of Livestock, Pregnancy Testing, Collecting Semen, and Microscopic Examination (Semen Morphology and Motility) — provided the perfect foundation.
“These courses gave me a clear direction,” she said. “I wanted to enhance my breeding practices and move toward a new career path in livestock breeding. This was the perfect opportunity to do that.”
A Well-Structured and Enjoyable Learning Experience
Casey found the course design both effective and enjoyable. Spread over three days, each course combined essential theory with extensive practical learning on live animals.
“The balance between theory and hands-on practice was great,” she said. “The pre-learning materials Orion provided before the course really helped me feel prepared and confident. The small group size was also a big plus — we had plenty of time with the trainer, and it was easy to ask questions.”
She also appreciated the chance to meet and connect with other students from different backgrounds, sharing experiences and building networks along the way.
A Smooth and Supportive Enrollment Experience
When it came to enrolling, Casey found the process straightforward and stress-free.
“Jenny, who organised the courses, and Julie, the Enrolment Officer, were both so helpful,” she said. “They always returned my calls quickly and provided all the information I needed. They were friendly, professional, and made the whole process easy. I really appreciated how accommodating they were to my training needs.”
The Value of Pre-Learning Resources
Casey found the pre-learning links Orion provided to be a huge advantage.
“The pre-learning materials were easy to access and incredibly helpful,” she said. “Having that prior knowledge boosted my confidence and gave me the courage to dive in and get the most out of the hands-on training.”
Expert Training and Guidance
Casey credits much of her success to her trainer, Paul Kenny.
“Paul was fantastic — very knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely passionate about livestock breeding,” she said. “He made the courses fun and engaging, and I came away with all the knowledge I needed to start my career in this field.”
Applying New Skills in the Real World
Armed with her new qualifications, Casey is already putting her skills into action. She’s now capable of completing all the core livestock breeding processes — from artificial insemination to pregnancy testing — and plans to continue building her experience by shadowing a veterinarian.
“These courses gave me the skills and confidence I needed,” Casey said. “I’m now ready to pursue livestock breeding as a career, and it’s opened up so many new opportunities for me.”
