Course Description
The course is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge of the proper techniques and procedures for administering medication to livestock under professional supervision. All responsibilities must be carried out in strict adherence to workplace protocols, ensuring full compliance with regulations encompassing workplace health and safety, animal welfare, biosecurity legislation, codes of practice, and sustainable procedures. This course is tailored for individuals who function under general guidance and take personal responsibility for their duties, routinely performing tasks within diverse, familiar contexts.
Course Outcome
AHCLSK344 Administer treatments to livestock
(Unit Release 1 – 11 February 2025)
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to apply health treatments and administer veterinary medicines and chemicals to livestock under professional supervision.
The unit applies to individuals who administer treatments to livestock under broad direction and take responsibility for their own work.
All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace, and animal welfare legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines, and sustainability and biosecurity practices.
Licensing/Regulatory Information
Orion Training (RTO Code: 30915) holds Animal Ethics Committee approval in NSW, Qld and Victoria based on our training practices that ensure the safe handling of livestock.
No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Entry Requirements
There are no pre-requisites for this course however students will need to meet the following entry requirements:
- AQF level II written and spoken English;
- Numeracy skills to meet the Foundation skills required for this unit of competency;
- Completion of a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment;
- General knowledge and practical skills gained through vocational experience in farming; and
- Access to a computer (device) and internet to complete the online training component.
Training Duration and Schedule
Students complete preliminary online learning in their own time and location prior to attendance on-site. The practical component is delivered over several days depending on the facilities and equipment available and specific learning outcomes. Training Venue and Delivery Mode
Students complete work-related training and assessment activities in an appropriate training facility using a face a face approach with their trainer.
The courses are delivered throughout Australia. Courses may take place at professional facilities where the required facilities and equipment are in place and available.
Student candidates will be offered a place in the nearest course to their locality or in their preferred location. Confirmation of delivery location will be provided via email.
Assessment
There must be evidence that the individual has administered treatments to livestock using at least two different methods of application on more than one animal on at least one occasion, and has:
- applied relevant workplace health and safety and environment and biosecurity legislation, regulations and workplace procedures
- confirmed treatment requirements for livestock
- recognised and reported workplace health and safety hazards and used safe work practices
- prepared, cleaned and maintained treatment site, facilities and equipment
- selected and utilised equipment and materials according to treatment requirements
- moved and handled livestock for health treatments
- administered health treatments
- monitored effectiveness of treatments and provided follow-up as required
- maintained records of treatments
- assessed and calculated number of livestock to be treated, and measured dosage and quantities
- monitored livestock behaviour and recognised treatment side effects
- handled livestock using good stock handling techniques and animal welfare practices
- communicated abnormalities, equipment faults and workplace hazards
- read and interpreted treatment labels.

Course Materials and Equipment
To complete the preliminary online activities, Students will need access to a computer and reliable internet. On-site training incorporates a comprehensive theoretical component. Orion will provide Students with learning and assessment materials to complete the theory and the written final assessment requirements.
Orion will provide all necessary training facilities and equipment to undertake the mandatory practical training and assessment activities
Ordinarily, Students are not required to provide any materials or equipment in order to undertake training and assessment. However, where a training venue stipulates a need for Students to bring a specific item, Students will be notified prior to the scheduled start date.
